However you go about adding your images, you need to make sure that they have a description. When you are using an interface like WordPress, there should be a box that asks for the ‘alt-text’. You probably have a long task list so it can be easy to skip over this bit. Yet, if you get in the habit of putting something detailed, precise and related to your topic in this box, search engines will pick it up. It’s also an accessibility plus as it helps visually-impaired users to experience your site.
Don’t be a drag
Whatever you do, don’t let your images be a drain on your SEO rating. This will happen if they are too large and take a long time to load. Not only will this affect the way your site appears, but it also means your visitors are more likely to bounce away rather than wait. If you have alt-text then they will at least see what will be there but it doesn’t send a positive message about your online savvy.
Make sure your images are as small as they can be while still retaining the quality you want. This means resizing them and ensuring you save them in the best format before uploading.
Don’t rely on your website builder’s resizing feature, use your own software to do it or find a free online tool such as Picresize.
Disable attachment pages
We’ve all accidentally clicked on a website image and seen a blown-up version of the pic. This is called an attachment page and it’s not great for your SEO. Search engines read them as empty pages, and this becomes a minus point when it comes to ranking.
If you are using WordPress, you can disable attachment pages so this doesn’t happen.
