Which social media platform should you be focused on?

There’s no one answer to this question as it depends on you, your business type and your knowledge base. If you have the resources, it can be helpful to employ social media marketing support to keep on top of all the latest trends. If not, or if you prefer to stay in complete control of your media presence, there’s plenty of tips you can take advantage of including the ones below.

Follow the trends

Some social media platforms come and go – like Vine, for example. You don’t want to invest a lot of time and energy into a platform that isn’t going to be around a year from now. However, making an impact can be harder on the big platforms due to the sheer volume of others who are trying to do the same thing.

Do your research to discover which platforms are attracting the attention right now and develop cutting edge ways to reach your customer base. Even a well-established service, like Instagram, will offer new ways to reach your consumers that others haven’t quite cottoned onto yet such as IGTV.

Know your product

Does your offering have a strong visual element that would benefit from a few filters and pics? Or do you need a few more than 140 characters to convey the benefits of your product? Answering questions like these will point you in the direction of one platform or another.

You may also want to gravitate towards a platform that you enjoy using yourself as you will have a strong feel for what it’s like to be a dedicated fan and what posts you like to see. These are the ones that likely to be popular with others as well.

Take advantage of cross-posting

While it’s a good idea to focus a large portion of your energy on one social platform, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a presence across the board. Just be careful to tailor your posts to the platform you are using by, for example, using hashtags on Twitter and Instagram but perhaps not on Facebook. Investing a little time in customisation tells your customers that you’re all over the media knowledge and it helps to keep your posts relevant.
